Geography Department

“Geography is a subject which holds the key to the future”.

“Geography explains the past, illuminates the present and prepares us for the future. What could be more important than that?” - Michael Palin. Actor, writer and television presenter.

The Geography department at Walthamstow Academy are committed to engaging, challenging and supporting students in order to help them make the best possible progress. We encourage students to explore the world through creative and fun lessons.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3, students are introduced to geography through enquiry, questioning and fieldwork. Students study a variety of topics such as ‘What is a Geographer? Geology of the UK, Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Development Issues.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, students follow the EDEXCEL B exam specification. This course provides students with an excellent balance of human and physical geography, which students learn, are interconnected. Urban and natural environments are studied in the UK as well as looking at a range of environments on an international scale. Natural processes connected to Coasts, Geology, Biomes and Tectonics are examined in depth, along with the relationship between these processes, human activity and settlement. The students carry out two fieldwork days, one of which takes place at the Essex coast. These experiences enliven geography for our students and provides them with practical enquiry skills, the very basis of excellent geography.
